New Year, New Expectations
It is the New Year season, the time of year when people pamper themselves with serious retail therapy regardless of their income. It is noted that consumerism is at its peak during this time of the year all over the world. While a small section of the society can afford materialistic happiness, it does not come easy for majority of people in the country.
 
A number of people from various states are now migrating to metropolitan cities in search of a better livelihood. They come to big cities and get employed for vulnerable jobs. Kapashera (bordering Delhi and Gurgaon) is an area, which has seen an unprecedented growth in the last few years. The area provides cheap accommodation to migrant workers, employed in garment factories, who have little or no guarantee of work or wage. Landowners in Kapashera are making multi-storey buildings for rent purposes to multiply their earnings which leaves no recreational place for children due to construction work going on round the year.
 
Last week, we established a Community Information Resource Centre (CIRC) in Kapashera. The purpose of this centre is to spread digital literacy amongst the people especially women and offer readymade information from the Internet relevant to these migrant workers.
 
Another coverage in this issue is on the SoochnaSeva Project, which aims at improving access to information of public schemes in backward districts of India. It is a joint initiative of Digital Empowerment Foundation & European Union in India for the term 2014-2018. Digital Empowerment Foundation, along with UNESCO and IHCN initiated a project called e-Heritage – Digitally Enhancing India’s Heritage. It is a capacity building programme to empower cities to create a digital presence of their heritage. Currently the project has been launched in four cities across India, Old Delhi, Pune, Shekhawati and Chanderi.
 
Last month, we also celebrated the 4th e-North East India Award in Itanagar. The current newsletter has glimpses from the digital festival as well as Digital Youth Fellowship Programme for 2014-15.
 
Another exciting story to look out for in this issue is the India of Tomorrow where we have presented an extensive coverage of thought leaders’ views expressed during Manthan 2013. There are videos of the conversations; full transcripts and lots of additional pictures of people who came across as ones who will matter in tomorrow's India.

Microsoft Digital Panchayat Young Fellowship Report
Supported by Microsoft, Digital Panchayat Youth Fellowship (DPYF) programme is an extension to the existing Digital Panchayatprogramme, which allows young fellows to travel and work with a cluster of panchayats at district level. The tasks of the fellows are cut out to make elected members digitally literate and collect content from the panchayats and put them online through the Digital Panchayat website. The programme not only allows digital fellows to train panchayat members and officials in digital literacy but also gives them exposure to how panchayats work. Read more
CIRC launched in Kapashera

DEF enters into EU grant partnership
Digital Empowerment Foundation (DEF) has entered into a five year grant partnership agreement with European Union Delegation in India to implement public scheme project in 5 backward districts in India. DEF is one of the 14 partners selected by EU in India to implement the nation wideprogramme. DEF aims at implementing the programme in West Champaran, Ranchi, TehriGarhwal, Guna and Barmer district. DEF - Gates Library Project Launched
The programme activities of DEF-Gates Library project have started its operations in Betiah (West Champaran) and Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh). The library project is an initiative of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) under its Global Libraries Programme. In India, Digital Empowerment Foundation is one of the 10 partners working in two district public libraries in Betiah and Kanpur. The project seeks to empower and strengthen library operations with the support of digital tools and applications through activities like connectivity and access for local citizens.
4th eNorth East Award 2013 Concluded
The 4th edition of e-North East Award Summit was concluded on December 13th, 2013 in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh. The Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, ShriNabamTuki, inaugurated the programme at the Banquet Hall, Itanagar. The daylong programme witnessed a power panel inaugural session, 4 parallel plenaries and the 4th e-North East Award Gala evening. In total, 19 winners and 4 special mentions were recognised and awarded by the Chief Guest and Guest of Honour. There were 33 finalists who competed for the 4th e-North East Award Challenge 2013. The programme was organised by North East Development Foundation, Department of IT (Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh) and Digital Empowerment Foundation. Read more
CR2.0 – COMMUNITY RADIO AND DIGITAL EMPOWERMENT
"CR2.0 – Community Radio and Digital Empowerment" was a workshop organized by Digital Empowerment Foundation in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The initiative aimed to bring together all Community Radio functionaries and introduce them to new media and digital tools orientation conducted by a team of invited experts and technical resource persons. The long term goal is to develop capacities for the CR functionaries to understand, deploy and support existing CR operations using such tools and platforms. Read more
A journey through digital empowerment in Baran
A small team of seven made up of Internet Society and Digital Empowerment Foundation (DEF) staff, two camera men and a future project site contact set out for a 48 hour journey to capture the stories and key learnings that currently live inside the Wireless For Communities (W4C) project across rural India. Covering roughly 1500 km by train and car over the two days, the trip began on Saturday morning at the train station in Delhi to reach Baran, some 10 hours away. Read more

Pearson Teaching Awards 2013
Pearson Teaching Awards 2013 grand finale was organized on December 13, 2013 at, 'The Taj Palace', New Delhi, where 18 teachers were felicitated for their sheer dedication, innovative teaching methods and extraordinary contribution towards learners and nation building. This was the second year of Pearson towards recognizing best teachers in India. As a Process Partner, Digital Empowerment Foundation was there with The Pearson Team at every step, from eliciting nominations, selecting best practices via grand jury process and facilitating finalists & winners through out the journey. Digital Youth Fellowship Programme
Initiated in the year, 2013-14, the fellowship programme seeks to engage willing youth from India and South Asia, who are keen to have development and grassroots experience in working with communities in any part of India. The fellows can be working or non-working. The fellowship period is for a minimum duration of 90 days. Invited and selected fellows are guided to work with communities under various programmes that use Information Communication Technology (ICT) applications for better usage and utility. Read more
Chanderiyaan e-Commecrce Website Launched
The effort to revive under privileged weavers in Chanderi is finally coming full circle with constant efforts by the Digital Empowerment Foundation, India. A little more than one month ago, Chanderiyaan project in Madhya Pradesh, which runs for the benefit of about 3,500 families of Chanderi weavers, saw the launch of Chanderiyaan.net, an e-commerce website. The website facilitates the, weavers in directly selling their products online. Read more
eNGO in Maharashtra
eNGO workshop was held in Satara in RajePratapsinh Library on 1st December,2013.Around 20 socially active people attended the workshop. It was a first of its kind activity workshop in Satara, which lies in the heart of Western Maharashtra. The participants were very enthusiastic about extending the program at grassrootlevel.The workshop was also held in Solapur, South Maharashtra, on 17th December 2013 in the Indian Medical Association’s Hall at DufferinChowk, Solapur. 25 NGO representatives attended the workshop. National Digital Literacy Mission Summit
The National Digital Literacy Mission (NDLM), initiated in 2012-13, is a small step in the right direction. With a vision of 'every household a digitally literate household', and mission to make one person in each household literate, the mission on ground through the 'Follow the Fibre' (FTF) programme, seeks to create examples of learning and lesson from community experience and need in digital literacy. The Summit was the first kind of its effort towards showcasing NDLM achievements and how this programme can be taken forward. Read more
Community Radio for Information Communities Summit
Community Radio for Information Communities Summit was organized jointly by Digital Empowerment Foundation, UNESCO and Open Knowledge Community (OKC) on 6th December, 2013 in the 10th Manthan Award Asia Pacific. The Summit focused on developing agenda and methodologies to work towards the goal of peace building and maintaining communal harmony using community radio as a tool. The discussion was driven to provide inputs on formation of a strategy and approach for implementation of the vision. Read more
National Digital Panchayat Summit
The summit was formed in a discussion-oriented format sharing the case studies around wireless network deployment and operations in India. The focus of the summit is to empower 250,000 gram panchayats by enabling them digitally. The summit also focused on making the Panchayats two-way information and content. The Summit aims to understand how panchayats can be empowered with information and content architecture created in the Web and training Panchayat people on ICT and new media tools. Read more

With the motto of 'Inform, Communicate and Empower,' Digital Empowerment Foundation (DEF) started its journey in the month of December, 2002. Based out of New Delhi and registered as not-for-profit under the "Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860, the effort at DEF has been to find sustainable Information Communication Technology (ICT) solutions including digital and new media to address digital divide in under-served and unreached regions and communities. With a non-political approach, it was founded to contribute to an enabling social and economic order in India as well as in developing societies with the need based support of ICT tools and means. With ground work since 2003, DEF has reached over 22 States and 8 countries.
