Training Towards Planned Housing
Digital Empowerment Foundation is organizing a two-day workshop for all Community Information Resource Centre coordinators on 14th and 15th May 2014 in Orcha, Madhya Pradesh. 20 Participants from 10 States are going to participate in this workshop. The workshop will be conducted in collaboration with Rural Knowledge Housing Network under the project "Grameen Awaas : Sthaniya Sahbhagita se Gunwatta Unnayan" Panchayats are considered to be the key decision makers in determining village and settlement in many areas. Women Digital Literacy Programme Launched In Tura
Tura is the district headquarters of the West Garo Hills. It is also the second largest town in the state after Shillong. According to 2001 Census, the total population of the district was nearly 5, 10,243. Literacy rate of the district was 51 percent and sex ratio was 969 women per 1000 men. 75.7 percent of Tura population resides in rural areas. The literacy rate in the district as per the Census, 2001 is lower than the state average. Read more

Digital Empowerment Foundation is thrilled to launch its brand new mobile application called 'm-Heritage Shahjahanabad' in May, 2014. The mobile application is designed to give users a unique experience while visiting the 'Walled city of Delhi' – Shahjahanabad. This app will allow users to navigate through the streets, lanes and by-lanes of Shahjahanabad. Using the app one can explore the ancient culture and tradition of the city. Users will be able to upload content, tag and share photographs across various social media platforms. The app can be downloaded on play store under the name 'm-Heritage Shahjahanabad'. Read more
DEF & Google All Set to Encourage Internet Safety In Assam
In order to raise awareness about online safety, Google India initiated a nationwide campaign, 'Good to Know'. The campaign focuses at ensuring that Internet users act as responsible digital citizens. As part of campaign, Google India and DEF have initiated a nationwide programme, 'Digital Literacy, Safety & Security'. It aims at imparting digital literacy in order to ensure user protection and promote ways and means for users to stay safe online. e-Heritage Fellowship MOU Signed With UNESCO
In 2013, Digital Empowerment Foundation in partnership with UNESCO and IHCN launched the 'e-Heritage Project: Digitally Enhancing India's Heritage'. This programme was intended to encourage and build capacity of the municipal authorities and local communities in documenting and presenting heritage through a digital media (website). Four demo websites were developed: Pune, Shekawati, Old Delhi and Chanderi and launched on the occasion of the IHCN Biennial in Pune. To take the project to the next step. Read more
Shah Wali-ullah Library – Digitizing Heritage texts and manuscripts
In an effort to reach out to local communities, Digital Empowerment Foundation has taken the initiative to save an old library – 'Shah Wali-ullah library' based in Shahjahanabad, Old Delhi. This project will help develop a website for the library, giving it a strong web presence and also help them digitize and catalog data.
The e-Heritage team – Sania Farooqui and Rohit Dhall visited 'Panjab Digital Library' in Chandigarh for a day to get explore and understand the methods used in Digitization of books and manuscripts.
A visit to Mewat: Studying the Use of MobilePhones for Healthcare
Every year Digital Empowerment Foundation conducts Mobile for Good Award in collaboration with Vodafone India. Last year ZMQ nominated their project 'MIRA' for the award. The project was selected as one of the four best mobile practices of the year and was offered INR 1 million funds and mentorship support for next two years. DEF's team visited Mewat on two occasions to monitor the progress as well as make a short film on the usage and impact of the application. The first visit was to a village called Tauru. Read more

Wireless Women for Entrepreneurship and Empowerment program boosts women ICT micro social enterprise and entrepreneurs supported by wireless Internet in 4 backward locations across India. The programme contributes towards an enabling Internet environment and Internet for gender inclusion and women empowerment. Sexual rights! What are you talking about? Does this kind of right exist in India? I never thought about it before I attended Global Meeting on Gender, Sexuality and Technology.
The meeting was organized by Association of Progressive Communications (APC) from 11th to 17th April 2014 in Port Dickson, Malaysia. The main objective of this 7-day workshop was to explore and develop a collective dialogue on gender, sexuality and the Internet.
Participants from different backgrounds and diverse experiences, came from countries such as India.

Connecting the unconnected through Wireless
Internet Society (ISOC) and Digital Empowerment Foundation (DEF) initiated a project called, 'Wireless for Communities' in 2010. The project aims to provide a holistic, community-empowered approach to connecting rural communities to the Internet. The motivation for the W4C project by ISOC and DEF is twofold. One is to totally democratize the availability of connectivity and enable access to information at the will of citizens outside urban centres – and remote rural areas in particular; second is to address the lack of content, product and services. Muncipal JE will come to CIRC to have meeting with the student. They will discuss about the role that can be played by a JE in progress of City. A personal development workshop will also be held at the Centre this month. Kirti Gupta a postgraduate in tourism and hospitality management will address the workshop. A meeting will be held in Jagannathpura village with the school/collage going students. In first of its 2014 consultation series, North East Development Foundation, Open Knowledge Community and Digital Empowerment Foundation together are organising a multi-stakeholder consultation on digital innovations and solutions for citizen services and empowerment. The consultation shall be based on invited applications and innovations, their selections by a panel and final invite for presentation and discussion on August 4, 2014 in Guwahati. The objective is to promote innovations in digital solutions and provide a common ground.

DISHA to setup a Community Radio Station
DISHA is a partner of Digital Empowerment Foundation. It is grassroot NGO based in Bhadrak Block, Bhadrak District, Odisha. The area covers 439 villages, 78 Gram Panchayats and 7 Blocks.
DISHA started as a small school for the deprived children. In future they expanded their horizon and started many other programmes. They partnered with Digital Empowerment Foundation to empower women and youth in ICT and tailoring skills.
Seeking help from Digital Empowerment Foundation DISHA is now all set to start a community Radio station. The organisation has already been allotted frequency (91.2) for their Community Radio station. Read more

Need for speed?
A friend recently blogged about the Indian elections and wrote in his post about a tweet from the Aam Admi Party's Somnath Bharti, in frustration as he wasn't able to upload a video of his party workers being beaten up in Amethi, that he would have done so if the broadband would have been better. It struck my friend as funny, at the time, but it struck me as very telling. Amethi could be considered one of India's VIP constituencies, a stronghold of the Gandhi family. Even an offhand comment about the inadequacy of the quality of broadband exposes how far away India really is from not just proving the internet to its people, but providing quality access. Read more

With the motto of 'Inform, Communicate and Empower,' Digital Empowerment Foundation (DEF) started its journey in the month of December, 2002. Based out of New Delhi and registered as not-for-profit under the "Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860, the effort at DEF has been to find sustainable Information Communication Technology (ICT) solutions including digital and new media to address digital divide in under-served and unreached regions and communities. With a non-political approach, it was founded to contribute to an enabling social and economic order in India as well as in developing societies with the need based support of ICT tools and means.
