Being termed as a literate is nuanced in the current digital era where the ability to read and write may not necessarily be a prerequisite to function in the fast paced world as the focus and the need of the hour has been on skills to use digital tools. As per UNESCO, functional literacy refers to the capacity of a person to engage in all those activities in which literacy is required for effective function of his or her group and community and also for enabling him or her to continue to use reading, writing and calculation for his or her own and the community’s development. Such ‘functional literacy’ not only allows one to communicate with the world but also to be able to plug in to numerous job opportunities that are available in the age of the internet. India@75, in association with Digital Empowerment Foundation, has implemented a project on Functional Literacy called FLIP which is based on the themes of the flagship programme of the Prime Minister’s Asaadi ka Mahotsav. This project is designed to impart digitized content of 90 hours on functional literacy comprising modules of basic, digital, financial and Covid-19 literacy to economically weaker sections (EWS) living in urban areas. The modules are aimed to raise life skills and employability of the targeted population towards better work for every Indian. This project is active in locations such as Nuh, Ghazipur, Barabanki, Bharatpur, Alwar, Guna, Chanderi, West Champaran, Tehri, Ranchi, Barmer and Delhi.
