Celebrated journalist Sir William Mark Tully visited Baank-e-Loom in October 2016 to cover a special story titled ‘70 Years of Independent India’ for BBC World Radio. This segment of the show, which will be aired worldwide in February 2017, will present interviews with weavers and digital literacy students to understand the changes, if any, the industry has seen since India gained Independence in 1947. Baank-e-Loom is a DCDP project initiated by DEF in partnership with Ericsson to digitally empower the weaving cluster of Saidanpur in Barabanki district of Uttar Pradesh.
Meanwhile, the EDGE programme has been implemented at the Baank-e-Loom centre as well; and girls selected for this course have been provided with full scholarship by FICCI-FLO’s Lucknow and Kanpur chapters. Girl students in and around Saidanpur can also enroll for a certificate course for product packaging and product photo-shoot. The course has been made available in collaboration with the Department of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Export Promotion. In this course, girls are trained in using a camera optimally for product shoots. Basic concepts of marketing, packaging and growing a business are also discussed with the girls during the classes.
